Description
Textbooks explain the Czech "listed words" in several ways, each of which has its shortcomings, and the one with the fewest should be used. The vast majority of textbooks teach the listed words without first introducing children to the concept of a RELATED WORD (and then WORD ROOT, PREFIX... STEM..., topics that usually get little emphasis even after the listed words have been taught), so the only option left is to add some related words to the list that do not look related at first glance (BÝT, DOBYTEK...). The trouble is that you cannot add every related word (there would be far too many), and everyone has a different selection they would defend to the death (which is why the list differs from author to author). Children also miss the chance to understand and practice word relationships using the listed words themselves. Our approach is different (and similar, for example, to the method used in textbooks published under socialism). We first introduced the concept of a RELATED WORD (and WORD FORMS), which leaves a shorter list of listed words that children remember more easily. In return, care must be taken to show how the listed words connect to their related words. This approach has a big hidden advantage. A pupil who goes through the first system will, over time, ask many questions like this: "The word BYT is not on the list, yet the teacher makes me write Y in it. So it should be similar to one of the listed words, but which one? Maybe BÝT, OBYVATEL, DOBYTEK, OBYČEJNÝ... Czech is so confusing." In contrast, another third grader who has completed our workbook (and ideally our textbook and activity book as well) will ask just as many questions, but sophisticated ones: "The words BYT, DOBYTEK and DOBÝVAT are not on the list, yet I have to write Y in them. So they must be related to one of the listed words. From my list, it can only be the word BÝT. Could DOBYTEK and BYT be ACHIEVEMENTS (VÝDOBYTKY) that make human EXISTENCE (BYTÍ) more comfortable? Czech is full of magic.
